Big Changes at the Delta Air Lines LAX Terminal

Spread the Word and Share!

Delta Air Lines recently unveiled its reimagined Terminals 2 and 3 at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), an impressive 18 months ahead of schedule. The dark and dated Terminal 3 is now light, airy, and spacious. Delta Air Lines has thoughtfully remodeled its terminal complex giving travelers a fantastic first and last impression of Los Angeles. Delta Air Lines can be proud of its modern and upgraded west coast hub at LAX.

During the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti joked that the once feared request of “can you drop me at LAX will soon be a thing of the past.” For Los Angeles residents, Mayor Garcetti’s words are a welcome and encouraging sign of the vast improvements at LAX.

Together with Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), Delta Air Lines invested $2.3 billion to transform the passenger experience at LAX. Justin Erbacci, Chief Executive Officer of LAWA, explained that Terminals 2 and 3 are now “beautiful world-class facilities with state-of-the-art technologies that will significantly improve the passenger journey.”

After touring the new facilities, I would agree with Mr. Erbacci. The modernized space has been thoughtfully redesigned to enhance the travel experience. By revamping the Delta Air Lines facility, including adding tall glass windows and high ceilings, a Delta Air Lines passenger will feel uplifted before departing or arriving at LAX.

Delta Air Lines Makes Significant Changes to its LAX Terminals

The bright and spacious check-in and kiosk area gives travelers a sense of calm before entering the newly expanded security area. The soon-to-be consolidated lobby for Terminals 2 and 3 offers 32 self-serve kiosks and 46 check-in points. Qualifying customers departing from the Delta Air Lines terminals at LAX will be able to use the latest facial recognition technology to check their bags hands-free using a digital identity. A digital identity uses information such as a passport number, Known Traveler Number, and a customer’s SkyMiles number.

Passengers, in general, complain that they spend too much time in security lines. To combat this complaint, Delta Air Lines will offer 14 security checkpoints by late summer 2022.  Eleven of the 14 lanes are Automated Screening Lanes designed to speed up the security process.

Delta Air Lines Caters to the Luxury Traveler at LAX

As leisure and business travel increases, Delta Air Lines is ready to welcome these travelers at its new LAX terminal. Travelers will be able to check in on their phones, use one of the automated kiosks, or a traditional check-in counter.

After a swift check-in process and security check, premium customers can take advantage of the Delta Sky Club. The reimagined Delta Sky Club is one of the largest Delta clubs, boasting over 30,000 feet of premium space. The Delta Sky Club includes premium amenities, such as views, multiple seating areas to relax, extra power stations for charging devices, showers, and upgraded food and drink options.

One of my favorite features of the Delta Sky Club is the outdoor Sky Deck. Yes, that’s right! Passengers can step outside onto the outdoor Sky Deck and enjoy the fresh air. The outdoor Sky Deck even has a retractable roof for the few days it rains each year in Los Angeles. Premium customers will surely be eager to grab a drink at the outdoor bar and enjoy the view while waiting for their plane to depart.

Delta Air Lines Commits to Sustainability at LAX

The sustainability and green initiatives are significant features of Delta’s renovation at LAX. The space meets CalGreen 2016 standards and is LEED Silver Certified. In simple terms, Delta Air Lines uses low-flow water fixtures that will eventually use 100% non-potable water supplied by recycled water. In addition, at its LAX facility, Delta Air Lines is recycling over 75% of construction waste, maintaining indoor air quality by using low-emitting materials for interior spaces and using a “cool roof” to reduce the heat-island effect and maximize air conditioning energy use.

Each part of the passenger experience has been thoughtfully planned. Even the baggage claim space has been revamped. Six baggage claim carousels on the first floor also benefit from natural light. The baggage claim area is spacious, providing passengers with room to move around when grabbing their luggage.

Future Plans for the Delta Air Lines Terminals at LAX

There are even more changes to come. In 2023, Terminals 2 and 3 will be consolidated into a 1.2 million-square-foot, state-of-the-art complex with 27 gates and quick connections to the Tom Bradley International Terminal (Terminal B).

The new terminal complex opens on April 20th.

I am looking forward to experiencing the new Delta Air Lines terminal as a passenger leaving LAX. Lucky for me, Delta Air Lines is the largest international carrier offering 140 daily flights to 53 destinations across the globe.
