ToggleRomantic Getaways in Northern California for Couples
Romance in the Napa Valley Region of Northern California
A visit to Northern California’s wine region is an incredibly romantic and luxurious getaway for couples. Romance fills the air as you and your loved one enjoy tranquil surroundings with fantastic wine and fine dining. The laid-back five-star hotels don’t miss a beat when it comes to true luxury. Plus, Napa Valley is a short drive from the Bay Area, making it an easy romantic weekend getaway for couples.
What can couples do in the Napa Valley area?
Wine Tasting
For couples, wine tasting is a main attraction in the Napa Valley area (Napa, Yountville, Calistoga, St. Helena, and Rutherford). Each vineyard has its own inspiring and unique tasting program. Some vineyards, like Joseph Phelps, invite guests to enjoy wine on a beautiful patio overlooking the sprawling vineyard, while others like The Prisoner Wine Company have a specialty tasting room. With so many vineyards, you have the option of picking the venue that works best for you. Visitors may prefer to sign up for a wine tasting tour and not have to think about planning.
For a romantic afternoon, visit Domaine Carneros, where you will experience the ultimate in luxury indulgence. During your visit, you can arrange a tasting tour to learn how the grapes are cultivated, how the wine is made, and the nuances of the different flavors. Book a private table overlooking the Carneros vineyard with a tasting menu paired with inspiring small bites. You can even add a flight of caviar to your tasting experience.
- Pro Tip
On your romantic wine lovers’ excursion, I suggest two to three tastings to immerse yourself in the wine tasting experience. If you are doing a self-guided wine tour, consider hiring a car to avoid drinking and driving.
Dining in the Napa Valley Region
To spice up the romance level while in Napa, consider elevating your dining experiences. The level of food and service is top-notch. There are 30 different Michelin-rated restaurants in addition to countless others that have been wowing crowds for years.
For lunch, treat yourself and your partner to an unforgettable meal at Auberge du Soleil, where the food is fabulous and views are stellar. Dinner in Napa is an experience too. Consider splurging at one of Thomas Keller’s famous restaurants like French Laundry or Bouchon (if you can get a reservation).
Other Exciting Activities for Couples
If wine tasting is not for you, there are plenty of other romantic activities in the Napa Valley area of California. Find peace and serenity on your romantic Northern California getaway and indulge in a couple’s massage followed by a glass of champagne or chocolate-covered strawberries. Or, if you are more of an active and adventurous couple, opt for a sunset hot-air balloon ride, take a cooking class, go for a romantic hike or bike ride with a picnic lunch, or play a round of golf with your significant other. Your options are limitless.
- Pro Tip
The Napa Valley region is extremely popular with couples looking for a romantic getaway in Northern California. Since it is an easily accessible destination from the Bay Area (San Francisco, Oakland, Palo Alto, etc.) and close to several airports, I recommend that you make reservations in advance for dinner, wine tasting, and even a spa appointment.
