What is the best season to visit California?

Northern California Adventures

1. Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay is a small town along California’s rugged coastline and is the perfect place for adventure and luxury travel. The picturesque coast sits on one side of Half Moon Bay, with the Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve on the other, making Half Moon Bay one of the best places to visit on California’s Northern California coast. It is also a great starting point for a road trip down Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway).

The Best Things to Do in Half Moon Bay

Ocean activities are plentiful in Half Moon Bay. However, the cold water keeps many people out of the water. Some of the top activities in Half Moon Bay include surfing the world-renowned Mavericks, home to big wave surfing competitions where waves can reach over 60 feet, kayaking through serene coves, and scuba diving.

Pro Tip:  Half Moon Bay is not the best place for swimming, and the swell can be too large for inexperienced surfers. Check the surf forecast before heading out for the day to see if the wave height is right for you.

While on land, popular activities include private horseback rides along the majestic coastal cliffs, playing a round of golf overlooking the ocean below, biking, or hiking among the towering redwoods. Driving the coast is a must-do as the views are stunning.

Half Moon Bay is quiet, except during the Pumpkin Festival when the small town is bustling with people and all things pumpkin.

Best Places to Stay in Half Moon Bay

After a day of adventure, guests can relax in luxury at The Ritz-Carlton, where pampering becomes their priority. Guests can unwind at the spa and relax in plush upscale accommodations.

Our stay at The Ritz Carlton was fantastic. After a day of adventure, we had drinks by the firepit and later dined on farm-to-table gourmet meals overlooking the Pacific. The bread in Half Moon Bay is fantastic. It was so delicious that we ordered a bread basket twice!

Pro Tip:  Consider opting for a room on the ground floor where you can have your own firepit and views of the Pacific Ocean or an ocean view room (pictured above). Alternatively, book an ocean view. The view from our room was worth the extra money.

Lake Tahoe is the ultimate destination for those seeking high-end adventure in the heart of California’s natural beauty. Imagine waking up in a lakeside cabin or a stunning resort with alpine views.

The Best Things to Do in North Lake Tahoe

In the winter, there are countless skiing and snowboarding options in the Lake Tahoe area. Visitors might hit the slopes at ski resorts like Northstar, Alpine, or Palisades, followed by après-ski just before the sun sets over the mountains.

Couple skiing in Lake Tahoe with Lake Tahoe in the background

In the summer, Lake Tahoe is a dreamy place to spend the day. On the lake, visitors can choose from paddleboarding, jet skiing, renting a boat, kayaking, water skiing, and more.

Off the lake, consider exploring the surrounding wilderness with a mountain biking tour or hiking famous trails like Chickadee Ridge or Monkey Rock.

4. San Francisco

San Francisco, a city of iconic landmarks and natural beauty, offers visitors an exceptional experience of luxury and adventure.

The Best Things to Do in San Francisco

Partake in an urban adventure by exploring historic neighborhoods, and cycling across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Or spend the day exploring Golden Gate Park and the impressive museums in the park, the gardens, and the lake.

Sea lovers might take a sailing tour across San Francisco Bay. You might also be able to rent a boat for the day. However, I suggest hiring a captain because the winds can be squirely in San Francisco Bay, making it difficult for novice sailors to navigate.

For those who have a day to spare, head to Napa Valley for exclusive wine tastings and gourmet dining in Michelin-starred restaurants or try a wine and cheese tour through Napa Valley.

San Francisco’s charm and diversity make it a perfect gateway to indulge in luxury while exploring its vibrant culture and natural wonders.

The Best Places to Stay in San Francisco

While in San Francisco, plan to stay at luxury hotels such as The St. Regis San Francisco, the Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco, or 1 Hotel San Francisco.

This hidden gem offers a haven for outdoor enthusiasts seeking upscale experiences. Guests can take advantage of the nearly 500,000 acres of mountain terrain directly accessible from Greenhorn Ranch for mountain bike riding (electric and non-electric), hiking, and horseback riding. For those who prefer to spend more time at The Ranch, traditional activities are available, such as archery, skeet shooting, and arts and crafts. This family-friendly dude ranch is the perfect spot for a multi-generational vacation.

Spending a few nights at Greenhorn Ranch brought back childhood memories of sleepaway camp. But at Greenhorn Ranch, you have all the modern conveniences, including your own cabin with an updated bathroom. We had so much fun, I was sad to leave.

In California’s Santa Ynez Valley, Los Olivos combines luxury and adventure seamlessly.

The Best Things to Do in Los Olivos

Are you wondering what there is to do in Los Olivos? The easy answer is plenty! Wine tasting is a must, with Los Olivos boasting numerous boutique wineries. The popular Fox Canyon Wine Trail includes an impressive 16 wineries open for tasting. However, you may need to make reservations in advance to visit some of the wineries.

Yosemite National Park is over 1,100 miles of untapped wilderness and one of my favorite places in California for hiking. With so much open terrain, there is always a new adventure around the corner. There are several areas of the park, each with distinct highlights. For those who have never been to Yosemite, you might enjoy my two-day Yosemite Valley itinerary, which hits the major highlights in the area, such as Yosemite and Nevada Falls, as well as Glacier Point.

The Best Things to Do in Yosemite National Park

Hiking is one of the top activities in Yosemite. With over 750 miles of trails to explore it could take you a lifetime to hike all of the trails in Yosemite. Whether you are a beginner hiker or ready to take on Half Dome, there is hike for every ability inside the park.

You might be wondering what else there is to do in Yosemite besides hiking. While visiting Yosemite Valley and assuming the water levels are high enough, visitors can raft down the Merced River. In addition, visitors can go rock climbing, take a bike ride, go fishing, take a driving tour (GuideAlong is a must), or go for a horseback ride.

For those on their second visit to Yosemite, you might enjoy exploring the highlights on Tioga Pass, such as Tenya Lake and Olmstead Point.

We usually stay at The Ahwahnee in Yosemite Valley. It is the closest you will get to an upscale hotel in the park.

Pro Tip:  I prefer to stay in one of the cabins at The Ahwahnee rather than the main hotel. Visitors often make a reservation a year in advance to score these scheduled cabins.
